Dr. Susan Bonnell

is a dedicated biblical counselor whose career began within traditional clinical settings. Before transitioning to a fully biblical approach, she worked extensively in individual therapy, intensive outpatient programs, group process work, and forensic environments. Her early specialization in complex trauma and EMDR, along with her eclectic therapeutic style, allowed her to customize interventions to meet each client’s unique needs.

However, as Dr. Bonnell continued to study Scripture and walk closely with the individuals she served, she recognized a consistent gap: mainstream therapeutic models, while helpful, did not fully address the spiritual realities and needs of Christians. Something essential was missing—something only a biblical framework could provide.

Why She Transitioned to Biblical Counseling

Secular Approaches to Counseling

  • Operates on general revelation (common grace)—
truths and insights God makes available to all people.
  • Interprets truth through psychological theory.
  • Healing is assumed to come through the therapist–client partnership.
  • The ultimate goal is self-sufficiency.
  • Emphasizes self-created identity and purpose.

Biblical Counseling

  • Operates on special/progressive revelation—Scripture is living and active, providing continual wisdom and guidance specific to believers.
  • Interprets truth through God’s Word.
  • Healing flows through Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit.
  • The ultimate goal is dependence on God.
  • Teaches that we are created by God with gifts for His purpose.

Dr. Bonnell understands that trauma and life experiences in a fallen world can create fractures in our relationship with God, which in turn affect our earthly relationships and emotional health. Having worked with clients ages 6 to 70, she has witnessed firsthand that Christ-centered counseling offers a more complete and transformative path to healing for believers.

Her mission is to help Christians find restoration, purpose, and spiritual alignment through the truth of Scripture and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Dr. Bonnell is a church-trained biblical counselor who holds certification from the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC). She earned her PhD in psychology, completed a postgraduate certification in Biblical Foundations, and is scheduled to finish her Master of Arts in Biblical Languages: Language Exegesis in the summer of 2026.
